A bound volume of music compiled by Lillias and Sophia Stuart, presumably sisters, with settings for keyboard and voice, the latter often for two singers, written in two distinct hands. The two women have copied here a variety of material, from traditional hymns to newly published works, including a works of French, Italian, Czech, German, as well as English composers, including those by: William Byrd, William Mason, “Te deum laudamus” from William Jackson (‘Jackson of Exeter’), Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, duets from Domenico Cimarosa’s “La Vergine del sole” and “Il matrimonio segrerto”, with other works by Jean Henri Naderman, Gaetano Andreozzi Rauzzini, “Non V’ É Piú Barbaro” by Girolamo Crescentini, the duet “Vive Alina sol per te” by Venanzio Rauzzini, Franz Josef Haydn’s ‘She never told her love’; a glee for three voices by Mellish; a duet from Pietro Carlo Guglielmi’s La scommessa; the duet “Che cangi tempre” by Bonifazio Asioli; two nocturnes by Felice Blangini; “O giore omnipotente” from the opera “Il ratto dei Prosepina” by Peter von Winter, and “Andante” by the Czech Jan Ladislav Dussek. This collection offers a glimpse of provincial musical knowledge and fashions at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
