Educational Setting:

This module is created for post-secondary learners in colleges, students in grades 7-12 in middle and high schools, and community school students.

General Description:

This module focuses on family relationships. It utilizes authentic language and cultural content such as stories and multimedia materials to deepen their understanding of traditional family conceptions and dynamics, particularly the relationship between parents and their children in contemporary society. Adopting multiliteracies approach, incorporating the ACTFL three modes of communication and project-based and community-based learning, the module features diverse learning activities, collaborative projects and AI tools for comprehensive language learning tasks. By leveraging the background knowledge of heritage learners, it not only promotes language and intercultural development but also enhances critical thinking skills. This approach offers an engaging pathway to a holistic grasp of language within authentic cultural contexts.

Rationale:

Heritage learners often face unique challenges in communicating with and understanding their parents due to the intersection of different cultures and languages within their families and society. This module enriches students’ cultural awareness and appreciation through engaging activities and projects, providing them with the tools to explore their family background and strengthen their personal and social identity. By learning about their heritage and diverse cultures around them, students can better treasure their roots and foster a respectful and inclusive perspective.

Teaching Objectives:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture, ideology and family dynamics.
  • Enhance students’ engagement and collaboration and promote student-centered learning and autonomous learning.
  • Implement differentiated instruction to accommodate the learning needs of heritage students and promote efficient learning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase intercultural competence by deepening cultural understanding and respect, and fostering diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI).
  • Encourage the exploration of diverse perspectives and foster creativity and critical thinking skills by analyzing authentic materials on parents-child relationships in traditional and modern Chinese societies.
  • Enhance communication and literacy skills through learning tasks of sharing their personal experience, research findings and insights.

Deliverables:

  • AI Activities: Language reinforcement (vocabulary and grammar)
  • Online Group discussions: Students do online group discussions to share their observations and cultural elements in the materials.
  • Collaborative Projects: Students conduct interviews and presentations or create videos.
