    • Primarily designed for heritage language (HL) learners, but adaptable for foreign language learners across languages.

  6. General Description:
    • This event is designed for heritage language learners to reflect on identity and shared experiences through cross-cultural communication. Participants work in small groups of peers from different heritage backgrounds. The event begins with a discussion among peers from different heritage backgrounds. Participants use conversation prompt cards to share and compare experiences.  A whole-group discussion follows, followed by an interactive trivia game based on cultural facts from various cultures. Participants enjoy snacks and prizes from a broad representation of heritage cultures.
  7. Rationale:
    • This social gathering encourages heritage language learners and speakers to connect with others who share similar experiences.
  8. Objectives:
    • Encourage learners to reflect on their heritage language identities and experiences.
    • Foster cross-cultural conversations to build empathy and understanding among HL learners.
    • Provide students opportunities to discuss and compare heritage language experiences and challenges, building a sense of shared identity and belonging.
  1. Activities:
  • Activity 1: Guided Cross-Heritage Conversation: Participants work in small groups representing a variety of heritage cultures. They engage in a guided conversation using prepared prompts  (in English).
  • Activity 2: The entire group (all participants) share responses and ask questions.
  • Activity 3: Individuals participate in a trivia game with questions from various cultures. The top three winners receive culturally appropriate prizes.

  • Conversation cards. Suggested: small customized cards with 8-10 prompts. One deck per group.
