Manuscript account book prepared by William Sikes for Sir William Lowther’s estate at Swillington, West Yorkshire. Sikes, presumably the estate manager, provides a clear and precise record of the receipts and disbursements for the seven month period between 25 May 1738 and December 1738 (dated in the Old Style 1 January 1738). Included in his accounting are the names of the tenants in cottages in the surrounding villages with listing of the receipts and expenditures for; housekeeping expenses; servants liveries; farming; repairs; laborers; crop figures and livestock. The final section describes the output of the colliery in Preston and the disbursements for running the enterprise.
