Yanbo Chen joins Wang Lab for PhD dissertation research.

We are very pleased to learn that our rotation student Yanbo Chen has decided to join Wang Lab for his PhD dissertation research! During his rotation, Yanbo demonstrated great talent, initiative and independence. We are very fortunate to retain him in the lab. We have no doubt that Miao and Yanbo – our first two graduate students – will continue to flourish as successful young scientists in Wang Lab.

Wang lab welcomes new rotation student Bing Yang.

Wang Lab welcomes Ms. Bing Yang, the third first-year graduate student to rotate in the lab this year, and another invaluable addition to the lab. During her undergraduate study, Bing majored in biotechnology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. She was also once trained at the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, studying histone variants and their regulatory functions in chromatin structure, which is in turn regulating various important biological processes. Since then, she has been fascinated by epigenetic regulation. Now she is especially interested in chromatin organization dynamics and how it functions in the cell fate decision of stem cells during differentiation, aiming to dissect the relationship between nuclear structural biology and pluripotency/stemness. She is thrilled to learn and apply the advanced microscopy approaches in Wang Lab to address these biological questions. Outside of the lab, Bing is a “movie maniac”, especially for sci-fi. She is also crazy about pop music and is a big fan of Adele, an creative English singer and songwriter.

Wang lab welcomes new rotation student Yanbo Chen.

Wang lab welcomes Mr. Yanbo Chen, another smart and venturous rotation student in our young lab! As a former undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Yanbo studied translation control using structural biology and biochemistry methods. He is very excited about learning and applying the totally different research approaches in Wang Lab to answer important biomedical questions. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer and baseball, alternative rock music, and reading. Welcome, Yanbo!!!

Wang Lab welcomes first rotation student Miao Liu.

Wang lab welcomes Ms. Miao Liu, the first insightful and courageous rotation student of the lab. Previously trained in molecular biology and biochemistry at Nanjing University, Miao is an enthusiastic fan of epigenetics and is especially interested in chromosome dynamics and spatial organization. She is also excited about the biophysical and computational training offered in the lab, and looks forward to studying a variety of biological processes with our highly advanced microscopy techniques. In her spare time, Miao is a big fan of pop music band BTS, and enjoy reading and watching TV series. Welcome, Miao!!!

Wang Lab’s first multi-omic microscope up and running.

Code-named Jellyfish for its colorful laser lines and the tentacle-like appearance of the tubing and cables, this home-built setup consists of a powerful microscope capable of both conventional fluorescence imaging and single-molecule-based superresolution imaging (STORM/(f)PALM), and a multi-channel fluidic system for automated chromatin tracing and multiplexed error robust fluorescence in situ hybridization (MERFISH), techniques to image numerous genomic loci or RNA species in a single cell. We look forward to many exciting discoveries with this setup!

The second of Jellyfish-class microscopes, code-named Nautilus, will be launched in 2018.
