Students Testimonials from the Yale College Student Course Evaluations

  • Advanced grammar structures, advanced and specialized vocabulary, conversation and debate skills, cultural and historic enrichment. Very good class!
  • An ideal language class: small seminar size, heavy focus on discussion and debate, charismatic and motherly teacher, moderate homework load.
  • This class was one of my favorites that I have taken at Yale so far. Professor Angela Lee-Smith creates such a warm atmosphere and the students got very close with each other and with the professor. This course is a great way to increase your vocabulary as well as your reading and writing skills. You also get an in depth look into Korean culture through watching K-Dramas and in-class debates.
  • This course was absolutely fantastic, and Professor Lee is a true gem. She was supportive and very kind, and both in and out of class activities were very beneficial to language acquisition. Watching and analyzing a drama was a real highlight of the course. I loved the conversational aspect of the course.
  • I enjoyed this class very much and learned a lot about Korean culture in addition to new grammar structures and definitions. It was one of my favorite classes this semester!
  • Professor Lee-Smith is fantastic. She is kind, understanding, fun, engaging, and thorough. She always answers each and every question comprehensively, and when stumped, she would find an answer by the next class. Her enthusiasm and generosity encouraged my engagement with this class, even as a senior.
  • I absolutely loved Korean 152. Professor Angela Lee-Smith was the best and most caring teacher I had at Yale. I actually looked forward to going to class every time. We had very dynamic debates and class material was quite interesting. The other students were very engaging too!
  • This is a great class if you want to build your Korean speaking, writing, and literacy. There are a lot of vocab words to memorize for lesson tests, a korean drama with worksheets, and a lot of discussions about relevant topics. I spoke Korean at home, but at the end of the class, I found that my skills have really improved.
  • This course is one of the best courses you can take at Yale. Because it is L5, we didn’t meet as frequently as the lower level classes, but we were able to go through a lot of vocab, grammar, and various cultural aspects through different mediums (one of which was watching a K-drama Misaeng!). You really do learn so much through this class and create lovely memories with fellow classmates and the professor.
  • First of all, I didn’t really see any ways of improving the class. Professor Angela Lee-Smith did a phenomenal job of catering the class to the students in a interactive, intuitive, and learnable way. The main strength of the class, in my truest opinion, is the professor herself. She makes each class a fun class with her stories and is always willing to help any student with anything that they might have difficulty understanding. She really focuses on trying to make you improve your Korean (speaking, writing, and listening wise) so that you can come away from the class with a better understanding of the language and even the culture behind it.
  • This was a simply wonderful class, with an extraordinary professor.
  • I can’t say enough good things about Professor Lee. She was kind, helpful, and understanding, and knew just how each of us in the course should be pushed so as to improve our level of Korean. She became not just a teacher, but a respected an admired role model in many ways that helped us to learn Korean as well as solidify our knowledge and love of the Korean culture.
  • I absolutely loved Korean 152. Professor Angela Lee-Smith was the best and most caring teacher I had at Yale. She truly cared about our learning and took time out to give us specialized attention.
  • Lee sungsengnim is the best! This was my 3rd semester taking her classes, and I’ve loved every minute. She’s very motherly, and really takes care of her students. She always makes sure the vibe in the classroom is great despite the material being dry sometimes. Always a pleasure to walk into her classroom.
  • Professor Lee is a very compassionate professor who deeply cares for her students. Her thoughtfulness shows in the way she teaches and communicates with her students.
  • Prof. Lee-Smith is absolutely amazing! She is a wonderful professor. She truly was eager for her students to improve in writing, reading, and speaking but went about it in an enjoyable way. She was also a motherly figure to the class, occasionally cooking Korean food for us and genuinely taking interest in us and how we were doing.
  • Prof. Lee is great. She explains terms and concepts nicely and in simple contextualized terms. She also makes the class more than a class – students decide to stay in the class not only because of the academic language content, but because of her personality and class-related activities (like Friday language table, cooking, etc.). It’s a fun and enjoyable class for sure! I look forward to going to Korean when I wake up. 🙂
  • Professor Angela Lee-Smith was incredible. Her complete dedication to her students is extremely commendable. Always supportive and accessible, she always went out of her way to answer questions from her students through kakaotalk or through e-mail. She would often cook for us on Fridays at our language tables where we would learn about Korea through its colorful cuisine.
  • Great teacher. Makes class enjoyable to attend every day.
  • Lee seonsangnim is so kind and caring, and she truly enjoys teaching students Korean. She makes class fun and exciting!
  • Very sweet professor who is very understanding of students needs and paces the class accordingly.
