KREN150 Advanced Korean through K-Pop Music

  • Professor Lee-Smith is the definition of a fantastic professor. I am consistently amazed by her commitment to students. She replies to emails quickly, corrects homework thoroughly, and is very accommodating of different students’ needs. I am always amazed by her whenever I take a course with her. She is a role model of mine, and a professor who all of Yale’s faculty and administration should be listening to. The growth of the Korean language program can absolutely be, at least in part if not entirely, attributed to her. No weaknesses whatsoever!
  • Strengths is the kindest most understanding professor. She brings so much warmth to every class and has been really understanding of all the weaknesses that have come with this semester. I really appreciated how she adapted the course so there were no tests and more recorded assessments like videos/audio, other projects, etc.
  • I think students learn much better through art (music, poetry) and the professor did a great job of incorporating art into the class.
  • A strength of this course is definitely Professor Lee-Smith. She’s AMAZING! She’s incredibly considerate of her students and wonderful at explaining new grammatical concepts and any points of confusion. The course is so fun and educational at the same time.
  • A strength of the course would be the interactive learning format. Professor Lee-Smith used a variety of means to get her students to practice their Korean whether that be hosting “DJ podcast” discussions, writing our own Korean sentences, or making our own Korean song lyrics.
  • Successes: using alternative forms of assessment like making a TED talk recording, writing our own songs, putting all homework assignments on a Google doc. breakout rooms were great!!! Allowed for easier discussion.
  • The project-based learning played out very well in a virtual setting!
