October 2013

:: October 16: Movie night – The Desert Eats Us by Kesang Tseten

Every day more than 600 Nepalis leave the country legally to find work elsewhere, many of them ending up in the Persian Gulf region. Countless others migrate illegally as undocumented workers. Villages are emptying, and an entire generation of Nepali youth are now convinced that finding work abroad is the only solution to securing a future for themselves and for their families. The issue is compounded by the fact that Nepal’s economy is heavily reliant on the remittances supplied by these foreign workers. But what of the workers themselves? Rarely do we get a glimpse of what life is actually like for Nepalis living and working abroad. Filmmaker Kesang Tseten explores this issue in ‘The Desert Eats Us’, a fascinating and often surprising look into the lives of a group of Nepali men working in Qatar.
