Prof. Basu earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Madras in 1986. She completed her Masters at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune). She received per Ph.D. from University of Mumbai in 1993 for work done at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
Prof. Basu was a postdoctoral researcher from September 1993 to October 1994 at
the Queen Mary & Westfield College (now known as Queen Mary University of London). She was then a researcher at the Theoretical Astrophysics Center, University of Aarhus, in Denmark.
In 1997 she joined Princeton University as a member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton.
She joined the Department of Astronomy of Yale University as an Assistant Professor in 2000. She has been the Chair of the Department since July 2016.
Prof. Basu is a member of the International Astronomical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Astronomical Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the Astronomical Society of India.
