Teaching Funding Opportunities

Yesterday’s Teaching w/ Technology session highlighted funding opportunities for teaching at Yale. Most of the instructional innovation grants discussed can be found at http://www.yale.edu/iig/.

Brad Gano from the Center for Language Study (CLS) spoke about funding for language teachers for purchasing course materials, travel for course enhancement, and support for instructional innovation. He also explained how the CLS can be helpful in the grant writing process. He also mentioned the opportunity for all non-ladder faculty to apply for a 1 semester leave for research and course preparation (this is not limited to language faculty).

Bill Rando from the Graduate Teaching Center and Danuta Nitecki from the Library spoke about several collaborative grants that supported classroom development including Imaging America and the ELI grant, http://www.library.yale.edu/eli/. The work on these collaborative grants resulted in the creation of the Collaborative Learning Center in the Bass Library, which involves entities from across campus (CLS, GTC, ITS, and the Library) to support teaching and learning at Yale. The Center will provide consulting services to faculty wishing to introduce new technology, pedagogical techniques, and resources into their course. For a full list of course support services see, http://www.library.yale.edu/eli/referral/referral.html.

David Hirsch from the Center for Media and Instruction Innovation (CMI) spoke about the Center’s support of faculty technology needs. CMI manages the ClassesV2 server, the Yale Open Course project, and iTunes U. They also support several faculty projects each year in an attempt to introduce new technology tools into the Yale community and to support innovative teaching with technology.

Ken Panko and Pam Patterson from the Instructional Technology Group (ITG) spoke about their role as pedagogical consultants and the grants the group offers faculty for innovative teaching. The Yvonne & Jack McCredie Fellowship in Instructional Technology offers faculty grants to introduce new pedagogical techniques and technologies into their teaching. These grants have no deadline and are accepted throughout the year. Another initiative in the ITG group is the Instructional Innovation Internship program. This internship will fund Yale College students to help support technology in the classroom. These interns will be paired with a professor to help with technology projects and in-class technology support. The internship is based on a similar one at Harvard.
