Welcome!

The 2018 State Legislative Candidate Study is one of the largest studies of candidates running for state legislative office. The study is a collaboration involving political scientists from multiple universities across the United States.

Purpose

Every year, important decisions that affect the lives of Americans are made in state capitols across the United States. Yet scholars have traditionally overlooked state politics in their research, focusing on national politics instead. There is a clear need to learn more about those seeking to serve in statehouses across America.

The 2018 State Legislative Candidate Study is part of our effort to correct this oversight by placing new emphasis on state legislative elections and policymaking. By surveying thousands of state legislative candidates from all across the United States, we are giving state politics the attention it deserves.

How You Can Help

The success of our project depends on your willingness to take our survey. If you are running for a state legislative office in the 2018 elections and would like to participate in our study, please email us at candidatesurvey@yale.edu.
