Contemplating the Rise of Asian Cities

The initiative on Contemplating the Rise of Asian Cities is generously sponsored by The Whitney Humanities Center at Yale. Additional funding and support has been provided by the Council on East Asian Studies, the Council on South Asian Studies and the Council on Southeast Asian Studies, with additional support from the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.

The project kicks off with a Spring 2016 Workshop Series in order to contemplate a simple question: what does the rise of the Asian city really mean? We build from this question to encourage scholars across the university to engage in reflexive contemplation about the existential meaning of the rise of the Asian city. Distinguished speakers invited to Yale from around the world and from across the humanities and social sciences will inspire critical and sustained reflection on the topic of Asian Cities. The workshop is designed to encourage further research and collaboration, both at Yale and within international scholarly networks. This website is intended as a central hub for organizing the long-term collaborations and initiatives that we hope will emerge from the workshop. Keep checking in for updates and opportunities related to the study of Asian cities at Yale and beyond!
