2013-2014

Cody Pomeranz 

Cody created an after-school chess program at Co-op High School in New Haven. His chess club included students from beginner level to advanced, teaching them chess skills and leading them in tournaments. The students not only learned how to play chess, but also gained the important analytic skills associated with the game.

Sabrina Rangi

Sabrina’s project, Bhangra Health Works, was a weekly nutrition and Bhangra workshop at Co-op High School. The students learned a Bhangra routine and engaged in discussions about nutrition, body image, and self-esteem.

Julia Schwarz

Julia provided weekly swim lessons for nine middle school-aged girls, leading them to become confident swimmers. Swimming is an extremely important skill that many children in urban areas never learn because of the difficulty of gaining access to pools and of affording lessons, which are often expensive. Julia is continuing her project in the 2014-2015 school year.

Rahul Singh

Rahul Singh taught a series of financial literacy courses for high school students at New Haven Reads, a book bank in New Haven. Included in the sessions were lessons on financing college, obtaining car loans, and entrepreneurship. The students learned how to plan for their futures and make responsible financial decisions. Rahul is continuing his project in the 2014-2015 school year.

Tara Tomimoto and Ashley Dunbar

Tara and Ashley used their skills as members of the Yale Women’s Ice Hockey team to teach young girls how to ice skate. In addition to providing the girls with instruction on skating technique, the lessons helped build the girls’ confidence.

Carolina Trombetta and Ilana Scandariato

Ilana and Carolina founded the Social Science Research Institute, a six-week summer program for New Haven high school students. The students worked in Yale labs and received mentorship from Yale professors and undergraduate students.  Ilana and Carolina are continuing their project during the 2014-2015 school year.
