Milton Pierpont “Pipie” Warner

“Pipie” Warner (Class of 1933), as he was known around Yale and his Pine Orchard home in Branford, Connecticut, represented Yale in the 1932 and 1933 National Intercollegiate Championships and helped them win both team events. Warner pulled off a surprising win in the 1932 North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina (first played in 1900) by beating a former Yale golf star, John B. Ryerson (Class of 1921) by 5 and 3 over the thirty-six-hole final. Warner started his title quest by beating Chandler Harper (who later turned pro and won the 1950 pga ­Championship) 2 and 1 in the first round, team-mate J. E. Parker by 3 and 2 in the quarter-finals, and Jimmy Robbins in the semi-finals 2 and 1.

Remaining in form, Warner won the second Paul Haviland Cup in 1932 with a thirty-six-hole score of 149, again helping Yale to win the team championship.
