Paul Haviland
1927 team captain
Paul Haviland (Class of 1927) began and ended his golfing career at Brooklawn Country Club in Bridgeport. At Yale he was a member of the intercollegiate champion teams of 1925 and 1926 and he captained the 1927 team.
After graduation Haviland continued winning. In 1927 he broke the thirty-six-hole qualifying record, set by Jerry Travers in 1906, when he shot 143 in the 27th Metropolitan Amateur Championship. Later that summer he won the Connecticut Amateur Championship played at the Greenwich Country Club. Haviland’s success continued the next year when he defeated Max Marston, a former national amateur champion, in the finals of the Shenecossett Golf Club Invitational. He won the New England Amateur Championship in 1929, but a year later he was dead at the age of twenty-five.
Paul Haviland’s friends organized a memorial tournament, open to all players from the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association, and played at Yale for the first time in June 1931. The tournament attracted a large and competitive field for several years, but it did not continue after World War II.
