Self-Directed Teaching Plan

Your intern Well Newborn rotation is 2 weeks long, and you may rotation with a variety of attendings during this time. To ensure that each intern receives the same basic Well Newborn teaching, we encourage you to complete the following short teaching ‘modules’ on your own in the recommended order.

Feel free to share any questions you have with one of your attendings.

  • Day 1 (First Tuesday) – Anticipatory Guidance
    • View the Yale ‘discharge video’ (also available in Spanish) that we distribute to families. By the end of the rotation you should feel comfortable giving a newborn ‘discharge talk’
  • Day 2 (First Wednesday) – Breastfeeding
    • We’re working on a QI project to improve postpartum exclusive breastfeeding rates. We audited mothers who introduced formula and found the most common reasons were a perception that ‘I don’t have enough milk’ and ‘baby is too tired/not latching.’ Therefore our first intervention is bundles for providers as to how to address these questions and answer family concerns. Please view the bundles here – feel free to print them out!
    • View this educational breastfeeding video while following along with the following breastfeeding Sore Nipples Checklist. Consider adjusting the playback speed of the video to suit your needs.
    • 1 minute read on Rusty Pipe Syndrome (brown colored colostrum!)
    • Remember: tomorrow (Thursday) at 11a you should meet with a lactation consultant to visit patients
  • Day 3 (First Thursday) – Neonatal Hypoglycemia
  • Day 4 (First Friday) – Early Onset Sepsis
  • Day 5 (First Monday) – Late Preterm Infants
    • View this module: Late Preterm Infant
      • Pay attention to the sections on Feeding Difficulties, Temperature Instability, Hypoglycemia, Hyperbilirubinemia
  • Day 6 (Second Tuesday) – Newborn Skin Findings
  • Day 7 (Second Wednesday) – Breastfeeding
    • Here is a second breastfeeding video that highlights the latch and different breastfeeding positions
    • Remember: tomorrow (Thursday) at 11a you should meet with a lactation consultant to visit patients.
