About Turkish

Modern Turkish is the official language of the Turkish Republic. The Turkish language is written in the Latin alphabet and it has a phonemic orthography. Words in languages with phonemic orthography are read as they are written.

Turkish is a Turkic language, which makes it highly intelligible to the users of other Turkic languages such as Azeri, Turkmen, and Uyghur. Learning modern Turkish is strongly recommended to students who are interested in learning Ottoman Turkish.

Grading

Assessment is divided into four parts:

25% completion of the weekly tasks

Students will be asked to complete weekly tasks assigned on Canvas. Each week is dedicated to developing the skills that are necessary to achieve these tasks. Students will receive personal feedback from the instructor before the deadline of the assignments. They need to evaluate the instructor’s feedback carefully and make the necessary adjustments to achieve the desired outcome.

25% quizzes

There will be 4 quizzes that aim to test the achievement of the weekly learning goals.

25% monthly exams

Monthly exams test students’ Turkish skills holistically, unlike the quizzes that aim to test more specific skills.

25% final presentation

For the final presentation, students watch a Turkish film that they choose. They introduce it to the class in a 5-minute PPT presentation. They should discuss their presentation organization with the instructor and get feedback prior to the presentation. Grading will be based on a rubric that will be provided on Canvas.
