Traveling in the Elm City

There are so many ways to get from point a to point b in New Haven. Using active (biking, walking, scooting, etc.) and public (bus, train, etc.) transit is better for your health and for the environment. Walking is a great way to see the city and get some exercise. Google Maps will help you find the best route to get where you need to go. Yale also has a number of walking resources to help you get around.

Bike

Biking is a fast and convenient way to get around the Elm City. You’ll be able to avoid traffic and get some exercise while you’re getting to and from meetings and classes. New Haven is a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community and Yale is a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly University from the League of American Bicyclists.

Shuttle

The Yale University Shuttle provides free transportation between the University, the East Rock neighborhood and the New Haven train stations for students, faculty and staff. This service runs year-round with the exception of University Holidays. You can even take your bike on the bus. Track the shuttle’s current location or with the Downtowner app.

Bus

CTtransit provides local and express bus services in the greater New Haven metro area. If you’re wondering how to get somewhere on the bus, Google Maps shows you all of the CTtransit routes. Also, if you are a university employee, you’ll receive commuter benefits for taking the bus to work.

Train

Both commuters and travelers can take the train to and from New Haven. If you’re traveling to New York, Hartford, Boston, Springfield, New London, or Washington D.C., commuter and Amtrak trains leave from Union Station to get you there quickly and smoothly. The Hartford Line, Shoreline East, and Metro North all depart from Union Station. If you are a university employee, you can use pre-tax savings to receive a discount on passes.
