Methodologies of Modern Language Teaching
“The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery” (Mark Van Doren). This was the goal I aimed at when designing a Methodology of Modern Language Teaching course at the Spanish and Portuguese Program here at Yale University. With the guidance of Nellek Van Deusen-Scholl (The Director of The Center for Language Study at Yale University) and the collaboration of Luna Najera (Co-Language Program Director/ Spanish and Portuguese), we were able to create a course that assists future language instructors to go on their journey of discovery as they themselves guide their students through a similar journey.
The course prepares the students for a teaching career through readings, lectures, classroom discussions, and presentations on current issues in foreign/second language acquisition theory and teaching methodology.

Although I do not teach Arabic, there was a plethora of useful content for me to reflect on and consider for my Spanish classroom. Thank you for sharing!
Really liked the puppet show idea and the way she incorporated diversity and justice in to her characters.
I liked seeing the overlapping applications for language learning, social justice, and technology. The lesson on play characters’ names is excellent – it meets the linguistic goals and addresses a social justice issue in an approachable way. |
