The overarching goal of our research is to use the sedimentary record to develop a multidisciplinary understanding of ancient life and environments during key intervals in Earth’s history. We investigate the interplay between organisms and environments and the role of organisms as environmental and ecosystem engineers—from very minute to global scales—in both ancient and modern settings. We are also interested in the processes of fossilization and how preservational biases modify the stratigraphic record. Our research program combines a sedimentological and paleontological approach with a geochemical and experimental toolkit and is based jointly in field work, specimen-based and laboratory analyses and biogeochemical modeling.
