Memoirs of Theodore Lane

A bound album with “Biographical sketch of the life of Mr. Theodore Lane” (pages [33]-59 from Pierce Egan’s 1831 publication: The show folks! (London : Printed for M. Arnold, 1831)), extra-illustrated with portraits of actors, actors in performances, playwrights, and art patrons, followed by cropped impressions, mounted, of the twenty-seven hand-colored plates that accompanied with Pierce Egan’s 1825 The life of an actor and on the final four leaves the nine small, black and white vignettes, also of theatrical scenes also from Egan’s Life of an actor. Lane was an English painter and engraver, who excelled at comic illustration. Also bound in at the front is an autograph letter from Egan dated 15 June 1832 to Mr. Elliott.

"Broadside with five wood-engravings, the largest in the centre showing the drunkard's coat of arms."--British Museum online catalogue.

Letterpress text with wood-engravings on either side of the title at head of sheet: on the left “Temperance and Happy Family” and on the right “Intemperance and Miserable Family”. Below the heading and on the upper half of the sheet, an explanation of a wood-engraving in the center entitled “The Drunkard’s Coat of Arms”. On the lower half of the sheet, a poem in four columns, surrounding another large central image of a drunken crowd, including a woman feeding her infant from a wine glass; the rowdy, celebrating in a room with a row of large barrels labeled “Holland, Brand[y], Rum, Old Tom, Cream of the Valley.”

A satire on the legal case between two purveyor’s of medical ointments Felix Albinolo and Thomas Holloway in the form of a dialogue between Mr. Bull, Mr. Murphy, Mr. Sawney; with an image with a cartouche “Albinolo’s, or, The St. Come et St. Damien (brothers & physicians.) Ointment, 23 Earl Street, Blackfriars, London.” decorated with an eye (all-seeing?) at the top, snakes on the side, and a lion at the bottom.

One print based on William Hogarth’s “O the roast beef of Old England, &c.” includes the attribution “From Hogarth by G.C.”
