Account of the beginning of the French Revolution

Selection: Account of the beginning of the French Revolution

A first hand account of the beginning of the French Revolution written perhaps for Lady Palmerston, begins with the description of the convocation of the Estates-General with details about objectives and development of debate clubs. It includes a discussion of the role of Jacques Necker and the murder of the national guards in the Tuileries Palace in 1792. There is detailed discussion of the preparations for new constitution which would establish a constitutional monarchy where power is shared with the Legislative Assembly. It ends with a discussion about the Jacobins.
