The gift of Pricness Charlotte

A keepsake written in the hand of Princess Charlotte at the age of six, dedicated to the Countess of Elgin “from her very affectionate Charlotte.” She promises her governess to do her lessons and “not put myself out of temper.” The manuscript is signed and dated from Weymouth, Dorsetshire when she was presumably on a visit to her royal grandparents and aunts.

  • Biographical Note: Charlotte Augusta, Princess, was the only child of George IV, King of Great Britain, then prince of Wales, and Caroline of Brunswick. Charlotte grew up away from her parents, under the care of a governess the dowager countess of Elgin.
