I would very highly recommend this course to any student interested in ASL, Deaf culture, learning a new language, or just learning to express themselves through a new medium. Not only do you learn a language, but you also learn how to better communicate with all people and deepen your appreciation for language and communication as a whole. (ASL110, Fall 2024)
Dr. S really cares deeply about her students and offers such a unique and important perspective on the issues she discusses in class. I really appreciated her commitment to adjusting to student feedback and how knowledgable she was about the issues we discussed. She created such a caring, fun classroom environment that really allowed us to practice our language skills and deeply discuss the issues at hand which made the class such a valuable learning experience for me. The ASL department is so caring and appreciative of students. When you learn ASL you become apart of such an 1685183 inviting and positive community of students and staff at Yale. I came in with no knowledge of ASL, but I am now able to hold a very basic conversation. Not only did I learn about the language, I learned about Deaf Culture and was able to interact with the Deaf community all throughout the semester. (ASL110 Fall 2022)
