UNDERBROOK CONCERT SERIES

One of the core programs of the YUJC, the Underbrook Concert Series, brings in top professional artists to engage our community through performances and masterclasses. The series consists of three to four concerts each semester, all of which are free and open to the public. Past artists include Braxton Cook, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Brandee Younger, Immanuel Wilkins, and Christian Sands, among others. These musicians often give masterclasses or participate in jam sessions with students before the show. By bringing the highest quality jazz musicians to campus for the Yale and New Haven communities to enjoy, we seek to further our goal of continuing to develop a vibrant community for jazz on campus.

Shows are generally in the Saybrook Underbrook Theatre, although there are exceptions. To hear first hand about the time and location of each of the concerts as well as other events such as masterclasses, sign up for our email list.

JAM SESSIONS

Once a month, the YUJC hosts a Jam Session, an organized opportunity for musicians to meet and play with one another on a regular basis. All members of the Yale community are encouraged to attend and participate. Through these Sessions, the Collective aims to provide a space in which musicians from all over the university can come together and celebrate their shared passion for jazz. These events are a great learning experience, and they’re always a lot of fun. Musicians of all levels of experience are welcome.

FESTIVAL

The Jazz Festival at Yale is an annual multi-day event hosted each spring by the Jazz Collective. The Festival features a series of performances, masterclasses, and conversations, with jazz musicians and scholars of the highest calibre, at different venues across Yale’s campus and beyond. All events are free and open to the public. The 2018 Festival included performances by Steve Wilson and Pete Malinverni, Melissa Aldana, and Nicholas Payton, who also gave a talk on Black American Music. Past Festivals have also featured artists such as Vijay Iyer, Robert Glasper, Arturo O’Farrill, and Christian Scott. Our next Festival will take place in April 2019.
