Step 1: Choose Your Dream Destination & Plan the Basics:
- Brainstorming: Individually, students choose a dream destination where the target language is spoken (Heritage Countries). They then create a mind map outlining their initial interests and desired travel style (adventure, relaxation, cultural immersion etc.).
- AI Assistance: Using the chosen AI travel planner, students explore their chosen destination. They will:
- Research flight options: Compare prices, airlines, and travel times, focusing on vocabulary related to travel logistics (e.g., departure, arrival, duration, price).
- Search for accommodation: Look for hotels, hostels, or local experiences based on their budget and preferred location. Practice describing their preferences in the target language.
Step 2: Deep Dive into Culture & Language Immersion:
- Cultural Exploration: Students use online resources and travel blogs written in the target language to learn about:
- Local customs and etiquette: Explore greetings, dining etiquette, and appropriate dress codes (using the help of natives when needed [Family member, Instructor, Teaching Assistant, Language partner, etc]).
- Popular tourist attractions and cultural activities: Research places to visit based on their interests, practicing describing them in the target language.
- Local cuisine: Learn about traditional dishes and practice ordering basic items at a restaurant in the target language.
Step 3: Language Learning through Planning:
- Language Integration: Throughout the planning process, students actively engage with the target language:
- Create a “travel vocabulary list”: Identify and learn key vocabulary and phrases related to travel, accommodation, and activities relevant to their planned itinerary.
- Develop a budget: Utilize online resources or mobile apps available in the target language to plan and manage their virtual travel expenses.
Step 4: Showcase Your Virtual Journey:
- Presentation: Students present their virtual travel plans in a creative format, including information about:
- Destination overview: Briefly introduce their chosen destination and its cultural highlights.
- Itinerary and activities: Explain their planned itinerary, describing activities and attractions in the target language, using learned vocabulary and phrases.
- Cultural insights: Share interesting (or surprising) cultural aspects they learned and how they plan to navigate them during their “virtual trip.”
- Language learning journey: Reflect on their language learning experience, highlighting the challenges faced and the progress made.
