My research focuses on natural capital asset valuation, management, and accounting. This includes issues of spatial aggregation of natural capital asset values, spillover effects in resource management, and the capitalization of coastal natural capital assets in property values. I am also interested in the complementarity and substitutability of produced and natural capital, particularly at the interface of natural resources and human development in coastal zones.
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how investments in health are inextricably linked to the economy as a whole. My research focuses on the ties between the natural environment and the economy. Translating changes in the human and natural environment to a common numeraire is one step toward understanding important tradeoffs we make on a daily basis between natural and manufactured assets. This work enables ministers of the environment to answer questions about future returns on environmental resource management practices.
