Testing

The Yale English Language Program offers two types of testing, SPEAK (OPA 1) or the OPA 2.  Please read the following information to understand and determine if you are eligible for these tests.

SPEAK (OPA 1)

The SPEAK test is an oral proficiency test that measures how well you understand and express yourself in spoken English. In the United States, it is currently the most commonly used assessment for English proficiency among International Teaching Assistants and Fellows.

OPA 2

This assessment is designed to measure your ability to communicate in English in an instructional format. The topics are drawn from your field of study and are suggested by your advisor or your DGS. The test demonstrates how well you speak English in the context of presenting information in your academic area to undergraduates. The OPA consists of 2 sections, a 10-minute teaching segment and an office visit. It is presented in a classroom with a whiteboard and is videotaped. At least two raters will rate your performance.
