The Civic Thought Initiative supports a culture of open discussion about some of the most difficult questions in public life. The initiative sponsors small, seminar-style events and reading groups that emphasize real back-and-forth among students, faculty, and guest speakers. Our guest speaker colloquia bring academics, journalists, politicians, and authors to campus to speak on policy matters as well as on cultural and philosophic questions. Our ultimate aim is to cultivate the habits of thought and expression that are crucial for democratic self-government: curious inquiry; careful analysis and persuasive argument; attentive listening and generous interpretation; a taste for questioning one’s own assumptions and a willingness to be persuaded.
