CENG 210 Video Project

Undertaking an initiative to promote the Yale Chemical Engineering Department, Prof. Andre Taylor, decided to take a more interactive, digital approach to the task by assigning his students an outreach video project.

Beginning the the fall 2009 semester, Taylor divided his CENG 210 class – Principles of Chemical Engineering and Process Modeling – into five groups assigning each a three-minute video project.  The projects were to target one of three distinct audiences: prospective Yale students and freshman; international outreach; and disadvantaged area high school students.  In Prof. Taylor’s  words, the purpose of this assignment was “to build teamwork, demonstrate creativity, and learn about the exciting careers of chemical and environmental engineers.”

At the completion of the project, each group gave a 10 minute presentation describing the process of creating the video and screened the final edit to their peers.  The videos were scored by a panel of five judges steaming from the Engineering Department, Film Study Center and Visual Resources Collection Library and the winners were taken out for a pizza lunch at Pepe’s Pizzeria in New Haven, CT.

Prof. Taylor continued the assignment in the Fall 2010 section of his class.
