그러던 어느 날 용왕님이 중병에 걸려 쓰러졌다. 신하들은 용궁에서 구할 수 있는 모든 귀한 약을 용왕님께 갖다 드렸지만 용왕님의 병이 낫기는 커녕 심해지기만 했다.
걱정하던 신하들은 서해 바다 용궁에 뛰어난 의원이 있다는 소문을 듣고 찾아가 그 의원을 용왕님께 데리고 왔다.
“용왕님, 서해 바다의 뛰어난 의원을 데리고 왔습니다.”
“그래. 그럼 바로 내 병을 고치게 해라.” 용왕님이 말했다.
서해에서 온 의원은 용왕님을 살펴보고 걱정스러운 얼굴로 말했다.
“아무래도 바다에는 용왕님의 병을 고치는 약은 없을 것 같습니다.”
“아니, 바다에 약이 없다니? 그럼 어떻게 하면 되겠느냐?”
“용왕님의 병은 육지에 사는 토끼의 간을 먹어야 나을 수 있습니다.”
“뭐? 토끼의 간?”
“여기 신하들 중 누가 내게 토끼의 간을 구해다 주겠느냐?”
하지만 용궁 신하들은 모두 바다에 사는 물고기였기 때문에 많은 신하 중 그 누구도 토끼의 간을 구해 오겠다고 나서지 못했다.

그 때 바다와 육지를 오갈 수 있는 거북이가 말했다.
“용왕님, 제가 육지에 가서 토끼의 간을 구해 오겠습니다. 걱정 말고 기다리십시오.”
거북이의 말을 듣고 용왕님은 말했다.
“그래, 너는 과연 충실한 나의 신하로구나! 네가 토끼의 간을 구해오면 내 딸 공주와 혼인하게 해 주겠다.”
“네? 아름다운 공주님과 혼인을 시켜 주신다고요? 감사합니다. 제가 지금 바로 육지로 출발하겠습니다.”
거북이는 토끼를 찾으러 육지로 떠났다.

공주와 혼인을 시켜 주겠다는 용왕님의 말에 큰소리를 치고 왔지만 어디에서 토끼를 찾을지, 또 어떻게 토끼를 설득해서 용궁으로 데리고 갈지 막막했다.거북이는 토끼를 찾기 위해서 하루 종일 열심히 기어 다녔다. 그러다 마침 큰 나무 밑에서 쿨쿨 낮잠을 자고 있는 동물을 발견했다. 토끼를 한 번도 본 적이 없는 거북이는 용궁에서 얻어온 토끼 그림을 꺼내 자고 있는 동물과 비교해 보았다.
“기다란 귀, 짧고 뭉툭한 꼬리, 빨간 눈, 짧은 앞발… 옳지! 바로 저게 토끼구나!”
거북이는 잠자는 토끼에게 다가가서 흔들어 깨웠다.
“여보세요, 토끼님. 일어나 보세요.”
거북이는 토끼에게 공손하게 말했다.
“아, 토끼님, 토끼님은 소문대로 정말 잘 생기셨군요. 지금 우리 용궁에서 큰 잔치가 열리고 있는데, 용왕님께서 육지의 왕인 토끼님을 꼭 모셔 오라고 하셨습니다. 부디 용궁 잔치에 참석해 주십시오.”
토끼는 거북이의 달콤한 거짓말에 우쭐해졌다.
‘음, 내가 잘 생긴 게 용궁까지 소문이 났군. 내가 육지의 왕인 걸 어떻게 알았지?’
토끼는 이렇게 생각하고 물었다.
“그래, 바다 속의 용궁은 어떤 곳입니까?”
거북이는 “용궁은 정말 평화롭고 아름다운 곳입니다. 맛있는 음식도 많고 보물도 많습니다. 또 사냥하는 사람도 작은 동물을 잡아먹는 무서운 동물도 없지요.” 라고 말했다.
토끼는 거북이의 말에 귀가 솔깃했다.
“그래요? 그럼 용궁 구경도 하고 용왕님의 잔치에도 가 볼까요?”
거북이는 “그럼 얼른 제 등에 타십시오. 제가 안전하고 편하게 용궁으로 모시겠습니다.”라고 말했다.

거북이의 등을 타고 바다 속 용궁에 도착한 토끼는 큰 잔칫상을 찾았지만 아무데도 맛있는 음식은 없었다. 그 때 용왕님의 병사들이 나타나 토끼를 단단히 묶어 용왕님 앞으로 끌고 갔다.
“오! 토끼야, 내 병을 고치기 위해 네가 간을 가지고 왔구나!”
“네? 뭐라고요? 제, 제 간이요? 뭐, 병, 병을 고친다고요?”
토끼가 놀라 눈을 동그랗게 뜨고 말했다.
“그래, 내 병을 고치려면 네 간을 꼭 먹어야 한다.”
“여봐라, 지금 바로 토끼의 간을 꺼내라! 내가 지금 당장 먹어야겠다!” 용왕님의 말을 들은 토끼는 가슴이 철렁했다. 거북이의 거짓말에 속아 그만 용궁에 죽으러 들어온 것을 안 토끼는 겁이나 그만 간이 콩알만 해졌다. 하지만 토끼는 자기에게 거짓말을 한 거북이도 자기를 죽여 간을 꺼내 먹겠다는 용왕도 너무 괘씸해서 어쩔 줄을 몰랐다.

그 때 토끼에게 좋은 꾀가 떠올랐다.
“아이고, 용왕님 죄송합니다. 그런데 지금 저는 간이 없습니다. 워낙 제 간이 만병통치약이라서 제 간을 노리는 자들이 많습니다. 그리고 간 효과도 크게 하려고 꺼내어 깨끗이 씻어 말려 감추어 두었습니다. 거북이가 미리 제 간이 필요하다고 말을 해 줬으면 간을 놓고 오지 않았을 텐데. 제 간이 용왕님 병에 꼭 필요하시다면 제가 지금 당장 육지로 나가서 얼른 가지고 오겠습니다.”
“뭐? 지금 간이 없다고? 그게 정말이냐?”
용왕님이 놀라 물었다.
“예, 정말입니다. 제가 거북님과 함께 육지로 가서 간을 바로 가지고 오겠습니다.”
토끼의 거짓말에 감격한 용왕님은 눈물까지 흘렸다.
“그래, 고맙구나. 육지로 돌아가기 전에 고마운 너를 위해 큰 잔치를 열겠다. 그러니 잔치가 끝나는 대로 곧 간을 가져 오거라.”

용왕이 베풀어 준 잔치에서 맛있는 음식을 실컷 먹은 토끼는 거북이와 함께 육지로 올라왔다.
“어휴, 이젠 안심이다.”
무사히 육지에 도착한 토끼는 안도의 한숨을 내쉬었다.
거북이는 육지에 토끼를 내려 주고 말했다.
“토끼야, 어서 가서 간을 가져와라. 용왕님이 기다리신다.”
이 말을 들은 토끼는 재빨리 숲속으로 뛰어가며 말했다.
“이 멍청한 거북아. 세상에 간을 넣었다 빼었다 하는 동물이 어디에 있어? 히히히.”
거북이는 그때 자기와 용왕님이 토끼에게 속았다는 것을 알았다. 그리고 빈손으로 용궁에 돌아갈 걱정에 엉엉 큰 소리로 울었다.
“아, 이제 용궁에 토끼 간을 가지고 못 가면 공주님과 혼인도 못 하고 큰 벌을 받게 될 거야.”

이때 울음소리를 듣고 숲속에서 산신령님이 나타나 거북이에게 산삼 한 뿌리를 주면서 말했다.
“거북아, 너는 충성심이 정말 지극하구나. 먼 용궁에서 용왕의 약을 구하러 이 숲속까지 오다니. 이 산삼을 먹으면 용왕의 병이 다 나을 것이다. 이 것을용왕에게 갖다 주거라.”

산신령이 준 산삼을 먹은 용왕은 병이 나아 건강을 되찾고 약속한 대로 거북이는 용왕님의 딸 공주님과 혼인하여 용궁에서 행복하게 오래오래 살았다고 한다.

The rabbit was flattered by the turtle’s sweet lies.
“Hmm, I guess rumors of my good looks have traveled all the way to the dragon palace. How did they know I am the king of the land? Alright, what kind of place is the dragon palace under the sea?”
The turtle answered, “The dragon palace is a very peaceful and beautiful place. There is a lot of delicious food and many treasures. And there are no human hunters or scary predators that prey on smaller animals.”
The rabbit’s ears pricked when he heard the turtle’s words. “Really? Then should we tour the dragon palace and attend the dragon king’s feast?” The turtle said, “Then please climb onto my back. I will safely and comfortably escort you to the dragon palace.”

The rabbit who arrived at the dragon palace on the turtle’s back looked for a large feast table but could not find delicious food anywhere. At that moment, the dragon king’s soldiers appeared and tied the rabbit up, then dragged him to the dragon king.

Oh! Rabbit, you brought your liver to cure my illness!”
“What? What did you say? M-my liver? What, to cure your i-illness?” The rabbit was so surprised he opened his eyes wide.
“Yes, in order to cure my illness I must eat your liver.”
“Here, take out the rabbit’s liver this instant! I must eat it right now!”
The rabbit’s heart sank as he heard the dragon king’s words. He felt his liver shrink to the size of a bean with fear, knowing that he had fallen for the turtle’s lies and come to the dragon palace to die. The rabbit was full of resentment towards the lying turtle and the dragon king that wanted to kill him, he did not know what to do.

At that very moment, the rabbit thought of a plan.
“Aigoo, I am sorry your Majesty. But I don’t have my liver right now. Since my liver is such a prized cure, there are many who have their eyes on it. And because I wanted my liver to be most effective I took it out, washed it clean, dried it, and hid it. If the turtle had told me earlier that you would need my liver, I would not have left it behind. If your Majesty truly needs my liver I will go to land right away and bring it.”
The dragon king asked in surprise, “What? You don’t have your liver right now? Is that the truth?”
“Yes, it is true. I will go with Sir turtle to land and bring my liver right away.” “Alright, thank you. Before you return to land I must prepare a large feast for you. So when the feast ends bring your liver to me.”

The rabbit, who ate a bellyful of the delicious food from the dragon king’s feast, went to land with the turtle.
Safely on land, the rabbit sighed, “Whew, what a relief.”
As the turtle delivered the rabbit to land, he said, “Rabbit, hurry up and bring your liver. The dragon king is waiting.”
When the rabbit heard this, he ran quickly into the forest and said,
“You stupid turtle. What kind of animal in this world takes its liver in and out? Haha.”
The turtle then realized he and the dragon king had been tricked by the rabbit. Thinking he would have to go back to the palace empty-handed, he sobbed loudly. “Ah, if I don’t bring the rabbit’s liver to the palace I won’t be able to marry the princess and I’ll be badly punished.”

At that moment, a mountain spirit heard the turtle’s cries and appeared. Handing the turtle a root of wild ginseng, he said, “Turtle, your loyalty is truly genuine. You came all the way to this forest from the dragon palace to find medicine for the dragon king. If the dragon king eats this wild ginseng his illness will be cured.”

The dragon king ate the wild ginseng from the mountain spirit and became well again. As promised, the turtle wed the princess and lived happily ever after in the palace.
