우렁 각시

옛날 어느 마을에 부지런한 노총각이 혼자 살고 있었습니다. 총각은 부모도 형제도 없었습니다. 총각은 매일 새벽에 일어나 밭에 나가서 해가 질 때까지 부지런히 일했습니다. 하루는 일을 마치고 혼자 집에 돌아 오다가 해가 지고 어두워지자 문득 외로운 생각이 들었습니다.
“나는 이렇게 매일 열심히 일해서 뭐하나? 곡식을 거두어도 같이 먹고 살 사람도 없는데.”라고 혼자 중얼거렸습니다.그때 어디에서 누군가 “나하고 살면 되지요!” 라고 말하는 여자 목소리가 들렸습니다.
총각은 깜짝 놀라서 주위를 둘러보았지만 아무도 없었습니다.
그때 다시 “나하고 살아요.” 라는 말이 들렸습니다. 총각은 이번에도 놀라서 주변을 다시 살펴보았지만 역시 아무도 없었습니다. 그런데 소리가 난
곳에 가서 보니 커다란 우렁이가 한 마리 있었습니다. 총각은 신기해서 그 우렁이를 가지고 집으로 돌아왔습니다. 그리고 부엌 물항아리에 우렁이를 넣어 두었습니다.다음 날 아침 일찍 일어난 총각은 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 방 안에 밥상이
차려져 있었기 때문입니다. 그날 저녁 일을 마치고 돌아왔을 때도 저녁 밥상이 차려져 있었습니다. 그 후로도 매일 아침 저녁으로 밥상이 차려져 있었습니다. 총각은 도대체 누가 어떻게 밥상을 차리는지 궁금했습니다. 그래서 하루는 총각이 일을 하러 가는 척하다가 몰래 돌아와 부엌에 숨었습니다.그런데 항아리 안에 있던 우렁이가 나오더니 갑자기 아름다운 아가씨로 변하는 게 아니겠습니까? 아가씨로 변한 우렁이가 음식을 준비하기 시작했습니다. 총각은 첫눈에 우렁이 아가씨에게 반해서 아가씨 앞으로 나갔습니다.
“아, 아가씨가 매일 밥상을 차려 놓으셨군요! 아가씨는 누구십니까?” 우렁이 아가씨는 말했습니다.“저는 원래 용왕님의 딸입니다. 그런데 죄를 지어서 우렁이로 변해 용궁에서 쫓겨나게 되었어요.”

그 말을 들은 총각이 말했습니다.
“아가씨, 저는 가난하지만 열심히 일해서 좋은 남편이 되겠습니다. 제발 저와 결혼해 주세요.”
그러자 우렁이 아가씨가 부끄럽게 웃으며 말했습니다.
“조금만 기다려 주세요. 이틀만 지나면 저는 다시 사람으로 돌아올 수 있어요.”
그 후 사람으로 돌아온 우렁각시는 총각과 결혼해서 행복하게 살았습니다.

그런데 어느 날, 지나가던 마을 원님이 남편과 함께 밭에서 일하고 있는 우렁각시를 보았습니다. 원님은 아름다운 우렁각시를 보고 한눈에 반해 버렸습니다.
“저렇게 아름다운 여자가 우리 마을에 있었다니! 저렇게 아름다운 여자가 가난한 농부의 아내라니. 원님인 나와 같이 살면 좋겠구나!”

여러 가지 생각을 한 원님은 우렁각시 남편을 불러 말했습니다.
“내일 나와 나무를 베는 내기를 하자. 네가 이기면 보물과 많은 돈을 주겠다. 하지만 내가 이기면 네 부인을 나에게 주어야 한다. 만약 네가 이 내기를 거절하면 너에게 큰 벌을 내리겠다.”

이 말을 들은 남편은 걱정이 되어 한잠도 자지 못 했습니다. 이 말을 들은우렁각시는 남편을 위로했습니다.
“걱정하지 마세요. 다 잘될 거예요.”

그날 밤 우렁각시는 바다로 돌아가서 아버지인 용왕님을 만나 도움을 청했습니다. 우렁각시의 부탁을 들은 용왕님은 요술 도끼 하나를 주었습니다.

다음날 우렁각시 남편은 아내가 준 요술 도끼를 가지고 나갔습니다. 남편은 혼자 갔지만 원님은 부하들을 오 백명이나 데리고 왔습니다. 그러나 내기가 시작되자 요술 도끼를 가진 남편은 혼자 눈 깜빡할 사이에 모든 나무를 베어 버렸습니다. 그래서 나무 베기 내기에서 원님을 쉽게 이길 수 있었습니다.

그런데 원님은 약속을 지키지 않고 화를 내면서 다시 내기를 하자고 했습니다.
“이번에는 배를 타고 멀리 가는 경주를 하자.”
이번에도 우렁각시의 남편은 걱정하느라 한잠도 자지 못했습니다. 걱정하는 남편을 보고, 우렁각시는 남편을 위로했습니다.
“걱정하지 마세요. 다 잘될 거예요.”

그날 밤 우렁각시는 용궁에 가서 작은 배를 하나 구해 왔습니다. 이번에도 용왕님의 도움으로 남편은 원님을 쉽게 이길 수 있었습니다. 원님의 배는 크고 좋았지만 높은 파도에 그만 뒤집히고 말았습니다. 우렁각시 남편은 바다로 뛰어들어 원님을 구해 주었습니다.
그러자 원님은 자기의 잘못을 진심으로 반성하며 말했습니다.
“내가 너에게 못된 일을 했는데도 나를 구해 주었구나. 내가 정말 잘못했다.”

원님은 우렁각시 남편에게 보물과 많은 돈을 주었습니다.
부자가 된 우렁각시와 남편은 오래오래 행복하게 살았습니다.
Long ago in a village there lived a hard-working bachelor. The bachelor had neither parents nor siblings. He rose at dawn each day and worked hard in the fields until night fell. One day on his way home from a hard day’s work, the bachelor began to have lonely thoughts as it was getting dark.

He muttered to himself: “What am I doing, working so hard every day? Even when I harvest grain, there is no one to eat it with.”

At that moment, a woman’s voice said, “You can live with me!”
Surprised, the bachelor checked his surroundings but could not see anyone. Again, he heard, “Live with me.” The bachelor checked his surroundings again, but there was no one to be seen.

However, when he walked towards the direction of the voice, he found a large snail. The fascinated bachelor brought the snail home. And he left the snail in a jar of water in the kitchen.
The next day, the bachelor woke up early and could not believe his eyes. A table was set in his room. That night, he returned home from work to another table set with food. Afterwards, every morning and night the table was set.

The bachelor was curious who set the table. So one day, the bachelor pretended to go to work and sneaked back home to hide in the kitchen. And what did he behold? The snail came out of the jar and suddenly transformed into a beautiful woman. The snail woman began preparing food.

The bachelor, who had fallen in love at first sight, came out of his hiding place to face the snail woman. “Ah, you were the one who set the table every day! Who are you, Miss?”

The snail woman answered, “I am originally the dragon king’s daughter. But because of my sins, I was transformed into a snail and chased out of the palace.”

Hearing this, the bachelor said, “Miss, I am poor but I will work hard in order to be a good husband. Please marry me.” The snail woman laughed abashedly and said, “Please just wait a little while longer. In two days I can become a human again.” Afterwards, the human-turned snail bride married the bachelor and they lived happily together.

But one day, a county magistrate passing by saw the snail bride working side by side with her husband in the fields. The magistrate fell for the beautiful snail bride the moment he saw her. “And to think that such a beautiful woman was in our county! I can’t believe such a beautiful woman is the wife of a poor farmer. She should live with me, a magistrate!”

After much thought, the magistrate called the snail bride’s husband over and said, “Let us have a wager of chopping trees tomorrow. If you win, I will give you lots of jewels and money. But if I win, you must give your wife to me. If you refuse this offer, I will punish you severely.”

Hearing this, the husband was so worried he could not even sleep.
The snail bride comforted her husband. “Don’t worry. It will all work out.”

That night, the snail bride returned to the sea and asked her father the dragon king for help. Hearing his daughter’s request, he gave her a magic axe. The next day, the snail bride’s husband left home with the magic axe his wife had given him. The husband left alone, but the magistrate brought five hundred servants with him. However, when the wager started, the husband chopped all the trees with the magic axe in the blink of an eye. And so he easily won the tree chopping wager.

But the enraged magistrate did not keep his promise and demanded another wager. “This time let us race ships to see how far we can go.” Like before, the snail bride’s husband was so worried he could not even sleep. And like before, the snail bride comforted her husband.
“Don’t worry. It will all work out.”

That night, the snail bride visited the dragon’s palace and brought back a small ship. And like before, the husband could easily win the wager against the magistrate with the help of the dragon king. Although the magistrate’s ship was large and high quality, it capsized in the tall waves. The snail bride’s husband jumped into the sea and saved the magistrate’s life.

In that moment, the magistrate truly repented his sins and said, “I did so many awful things to you, and still you saved me. I really did wrong.” The magistrate gave the snail bride’s husband lots of jewels and money. The now wealthy snail bride and her husband lived happily together for a long, long time.
