하루는 게으름뱅이의 아내가 말했어요.
“여보, 할 일도 많은데 그렇게 매일 잠만 자고 놀기만 하면 어떡해요? 내가 정말 바쁘니까 일 좀 도와줘요.”
그런데 아내의 말을 들은 게으름뱅이는, “어휴, 또 그 잔소리. 잔소리 좀 그만하지. 내가 당신 잔소리 때문에 정말 못 살겠어! 날 좀 내버려 둬!”하며 화를 냈어요.

집을 뛰쳐나온 게으름뱅이는 길을 걷다가 언덕 위 나무 밑에서 한 할아버지를 보았어요.
그 할아버지는 뭔가를 열심히 만들고 있었어요. 게으름뱅이는 할아버지가 뭐를 만들고 있는지 궁금해서 물었어요.
“할아버지, 지금 뭘 만들고 계세요?”
그러자 그 노인은 게으름뱅이를 보면서 말했어요.
“소 머리 탈이야. 일하기 싫어하는 사람이 이 탈을 쓰면 좋은 일이 생겨.”

그 말을 들은 게으름뱅이는 얼른 그 탈을 썼어요. 그런데 갑자기 게으름뱅이의 머리가 소 머리로 바뀌고 몸도 소의 몸으로 바뀌었어요. 게으름뱅이는 깜짝 놀라서 소리쳤어요.
“악! 할아버지, 이게 무슨 일입니까? 도와 주세요.”
그렇지만 사람 말 소리 대신 소 울음 소리만 나왔어요.
“음매~! 음매~! 음매~!”

할어버지는 소가 된 게으름뱅이의 목에 밧줄을 매고 소시장으로 끌고 가서 한 농부에게 팔았어요. 노인은 농부에게 말했어요.
“이 소는 아주 튼튼해서 일을 잘 할 거예요. 그런데 이 소는 무를 먹으면 죽으니까 절대로 무밭에는 데리고 가지 마세요.”

노인의 말을 듣고 농부는 말했어요.
“아, 그래요? 참 이상한 소네요. 조심하겠습니다.”
이렇게 말하고 농부는 소를 끌고 집으로 갔어요.
소가 된 게으름뱅이는 계속 소리쳤어요.
“나는 소가 아니에요! 사람이에요!”
그런데 그 농부는 소가 좀 이상하다고 생각했어요.
“왜 이 소는 계속 큰소리로 울까?”
농부는 매일 소를 끌고 밭에 나가서 일을 시켰어요.
소가 된 게으름뱅이는 매일 밭에 가서 힘들게 일을 했어요. 너무 힘들어서 좀 쉬려고 하면 농부는 아프게 때리고 밥도 많이 주지 않았어요. 소가 된 남자는 매일 매도 맞고 배도 고파 살기가 너무 힘들었어요. 그래서 소가 된 남자는 그동안 게을렀던 것을 후회했어요.
“남들이 부지런히 일할 때 나는 늘 잠만 자고 놀기만 해서 이런 일이 생겼어!” “매일 힘들게 일하고 맞고 배도 고프고… 아! 이렇게 사는 것보다 차라리 죽는 게 낫겠다!”라고 생각했어요.

그 때 노인이 농부에게 한 말이 생각났어요.
“그래, 무를 먹으면 죽는다고 했지. 무를 먹어야겠다.”
소가 된 게으름뱅이는 무밭으로 가서 무를 먹었어요.

그런데 무를 먹자마자 갑자기 소의 탈이 벗겨지면서 게으름뱅이는 다시 사람으로 돌아왔어요.
게으름뱅이는 기뻐하면서 얼른 자기 집으로 달려갔어요. 집에 돌아간 게으름뱅이는 그 후부터는 일도 아주 열심히 하고 부지런한 사람이 되어서 아내와 함께 오래오래 행복하게 살았어요.

One day, the idler’s wife told him, “Darling, how can you sleep and play all day when there’s so much work to do? I’m so busy, so please help me.”

But the idler said angrily, “Ugh, you’re nagging me again. Stop nagging me. I can’t get any peace with you nagging me all the time! Just leave me alone!”

The idler left home, and as he was walking, he saw an old man beneath
a tree on a hilltop. The old man was toiling away at something. The idler was curious what the man was making, so he asked. “What is that you’re making?” The old man looked at the idler and said, “It’s a mask of a cow’s face. If those who hate working wear this mask, good things happen to them.” When the idler heard this, he immediately put on the mask. But suddenly the idler’s head turned into a cow’s head, and his body became a cow’s body.

The idler shouted in surprise. “Ahh! Mister, what just happened? Please help me.” What came out of the idler’s mouth was not human speech, but instead the crying of a cow. “Moo~! Moo~! Moo~!”

The old man tied a rope around the cow’s neck, dragged him to the cow market, and sold him to a farmer. The man told the farmer,
“This cow is very strong, so it will work well. But this cow will die if it eats radish, so don’t ever bring it to a radish field.”

When the farmer heard the old man’s words, he said, “Oh, really? What a strange cow. I’ll be careful.” Then the farmer dragged the cow to his home. The cow-turned idler kept shouting. “I’m not a cow! I’m a human!”

However, the farmer thought the cow was quite strange. “Why does this cow keep loudly crying?” The farmer dragged the cow to the field every day and worked him hard. Every day the cow-turned idler worked hard in the fields. When he tried to rest when it was too much to bear, the farmer would beat him and deny him food.

It was difficult to live for the cow-turned idler, since he was beaten and hungry every day. So the cow-turned idler regretted being lazy.
He thought, “This happened because whenever others worked busily I would sleep and play all day! I work hard every day, I get beaten, and I’m hungry… Ah! It’s better to die than live like this!”

At that moment, he remembered what the old man said to the farmer.
“Yes, he said I would die if I ate radish. I must eat radish.”
The cow-turned idler went to the radish field and ate some radish.

However, as soon as he ate the radish, the cow mask fell off and the idler was returned to his human form. The idler joyously ran home. Once he returned home, the idler worked very hard and became a busybody, and so he lived happily ever after with his wife.
