This post is related to kinetics associated with metal/ceramic interfaces. In a recent work, we demonstrated using a combined computational and experimental effort that metal-ceramic interfaces can be high diffusivity paths.
I wrote a blog about this finding in the nature community of device and materials engineering where we share this finding. The conclusion is that such interfaces present in devices such as semiconductor devices, solid-state batteries, etc. can be a significant source of the material transport along the interface. In the work, we also came up with a diffusion descriptor that connects the surface energy of the metal (γ) to the Work of adhesion between a specific metal-ceramic pair (W_ad).
