Focused Panels:

Our workshop will feature focused panels comprising language educators with firsthand experience developing and implementing OER in their classrooms through collaborative efforts. These discussions are designed to spotlight real-classroom applications of OER, offering a practical, valuable learning experience that emphasizes the actionable over the theoretical. We aim to bring together practitioners who have successfully created and utilized OER to provide attendees with directly applicable and readily implementable insights in their teaching contexts.

Lightning Showcases (15-minute presentation, followed by 30-minute panel Q/A; Time-keeping: All presenters will be reminded to adhere to their allotted time to ensure a smooth flow of the event. * Note: Presenters will be provided with guided prompts for effective showcases for participants.)  Dive into the heart of Open Educational Resources (OER) with our focused panel, “OER in Action: Practical Applications and Strategies for Language Educators.” This session is designed to move beyond theoretical discussions, providing attendees with real-world application examples, hands-on guidance, and actionable strategies for creating and integrating OER modules into language teaching and learning.

    This break serves a dual purpose: participants will receive important information about the upcoming hands-on sessions and have the opportunity to relax and engage with colleagues.

  • 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.    Hands on Collaboration Session                                        2 hours hands-on work + 45 minutes sharing and discussion           Moderator: Angela Lee-Smith (Yale)

This hands-on session stands as the workshop’s pinnacle. Participants actively engage in small groups to create OER modules through guided, step-by-step applications. Embodying the essence of ‘learning by doing,’ this segment ensures that attendees grasp theoretical concepts and apply them in practice, fostering a deeper understanding and skill set in OER development. The organizing team will prepare and provide the workshop materials.

Preparation: (pre-workshop completion)

  • Set up tables with tags indicating grouping criteria (theme, language, level) for focused collaboration.
  • Distribute a list or map at the entrance guiding participants to their interest-aligned table. 

Breakout Sessions and Facilitators

  • Heritage Languages Working Group: Hi-Sun Kim (Harvard), Yuseon Yun (Princeton)
  • LCTLs Working Group: Meejeong Song (Cornell), Heeyeong Jung (Brown)
  • Commonly Taught Languages Working Group: Ji-Young Jung (Columbia)
  • Peer Mentors: Focus panel presenters will also participate in these hands-on application sessions, engaging with participants and offering practical guidance in the creation of OER modules. (List all mentors (presenters).

 

  • 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm   Collaborative Work Session:
  • Brief Introduction (5 minutes): Reiterate the session’s goals and encourage productive collaboration.
  • Group Work (100 minutes):
  • Participants join their pre-selected groups based on interest.
  • Each group discusses and collaborates on OER module development, utilizing the provided template.
  • Facilitators circulate to offer guidance, answer questions, and stimulate discussion.
  • Mentors play a key role in working with their peer mentees.
  • Transition to Sharing and Presentation (10 minutes before end):

We will inform participants to start wrapping up their discussions and prepare a summary or critical points for sharing.

  • 3:00 pm – 3:45 pm   Sharing and Presentation Session (45 Minutes) Moderator: Heeyeong Jung (Brown)  

     Group Presentations (30 minutes; 5-minute/ group):

  • Invite each group to present a summary of their work, focusing on innovative ideas, challenges encountered, and solutions or strategies developed.
  • Limit presentations to 5 minutes each to allow time for multiple groups to share. (Presentation display: Padlet)
  • Q&A and Discussion (15 minutes):
  • Open the floor for questions from the audience to presenters.
  • Discuss observed themes, common challenges, and potential collaborations from the presentations.
