“The Rise of OER in Language Teaching and Learning”
Abstract
Although the field of second language education has been relatively slow in adopting open educational practices, the past decade has seen a steady increase in the development of Open Educational Resources (OER) for language learning. Using a variety of examples of OER, including full courses, activities, textbooks, etc., this talk describes how, by embracing OER, our field has created new affordances that contribute to increased opportunities for collaboration among and between learners and educators, improved access and inclusivity, and a more open knowledge ecosystem. We will also examine practical strategies for institutions to break down barriers to adoption and dissemination and to facilitate faculty engagement in the development and use of OER for language teaching.
