October 9: “Figures of Empire” Tour and Discussion

Our inaugural event of the 2014-2015 academic year is a tour and discussion of the Yale Center for British Art exhibition, Figures of Empire: Slavery and Portraiture in Eighteenth-Century Atlantic Britain. The exhibition was curated by Esther Chadwick and Meredith Gamer, PhD candidates in the Department of the History of Art at Yale University, and Cyra Levenson, Associate Curator of Education at the Yale Center for British Art. The curators will provide a tour of the exhibition followed by a reception and seminar discussion of two texts, listed below.* Please meet at 4:00 p.m. in front of the Yale Center for British Art. Following the tour, which should last around 45 minutes to an hour, our group will walk to room 259 in Loria Hall for a discussion of the text over refreshments.

4:00: Convene at the front entrance to the Yale Center for British Art (1080 Chapel Street)

5:00: Reception and roundtable discussion at Loria Hall, room 259

October 29: Nina Amstutz, “A Self-Portrait as Landscape Painter: Caspar David Friedrich, the Myth of the Mad Artist, and Phrenology”

Nina Amstutz,  Assistant Professor, History of Art and Architecture, University of Oregon, and Postdoctoral Research Associate, YCBA, will present her research on the artist Casper David Friedrich.

Talk will begin at 5:30 in Loria Hall, Room 351. Reception to follow.

 

December 5: Tour of 19th-Century galleries at YUAG with Laurence Kanter

Laurence Kanter, Chief Curator and Lionel Goldfrank III Curator of European Art at the Yale University Art Gallery, will provide a tour of 19th Century paintings in the Gallery’s collection. Following the tour, we will convene across the street in Loria Hall for a holiday luncheon to celebrate the start of the winter break.
