YUWO Scholarships, our most widely supported service project, continues and grows. Scholarships are designed for women associated with the Yale community through their own affiliation or that of their immediate family members (past or present), whose formal education has been interrupted or delayed, and who wish to resume their studies or enhance their careers.
Since 1972 YUWO has awarded hundreds of scholarships, totaling over $350,000.
Support for the YUWO Scholarship program comes from contributions to the
- Annual Scholarship Fund
- Scholarship Trust Fund
- Magee Fenn Trust Fund
- Gustave and Carol Lynn Sirot Trust Fund
- Kay Ross Scholarship
Tax deductible contributions may be made at the Wine and Cheese Reception, with annual dues payment, with the Annual Luncheon registration, or they may be sent at any time to:

**Federal tax regulation and YUWO prohibit YUWO scholarships to YUWO members and their immediate families
Many Funds … One Cause
Members and friends sometimes wonder why YUWO has four separate funds, instead of just one, to support its Scholarship Program. All contributions are used to provide Scholarships for Higher Education for women in the Yale community, but each fund has a special purpose.
The Annual Scholarship Fund
Contributions to the YUWO Annual Scholarship Fund are distributed, whenever possible, to scholarship recipients in May of the academic year in which the monies are contributed.
The Scholarship Trust Fund
Contributions to the Scholarship Trust Fund remain in the Trust Fund in perpetuity and only the interest from the fund may be distributed annually to scholarship recipients. The Trust Fund was established in 1977 to ensure that, in good years or bad, some funding would be available for scholarship awards. The Trust Fund was established with a $400 grant from YUWO’s general fund, and has grown through the intervening years from additional contributions made by individuals and the general treasury, as well as from accumulated interest on these funds. Today, the Trust Fund stands in excess of $40,000. In 1998, these funds were transferred to the Greater New Haven Community Foundation for investment.
The Magee Fenn Scholarship Trust Fund
A Magee Fenn Scholarship is awarded each year from the fund that was established to honor the life and work of Magee Fenn, who was the first chair of YUWO’s Scholarship Program. Contributions continue to be received for this memorial fund.
The Gustave and Carol Lynn Sirot Trust Fund
Carol Sirot, a long-time member of YUWO, established The Gustave and Carol Lynn Sirot Fund in honor of her late husband, Gustave Sirot, MD, FACP in 1999. The Sirot Fund is designed for an award to a candidate aged 35 years or older. The first such scholarship was given in the spring of 2000. The Sirot Fund is invested with the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and interest from this trust fund supports this named scholarship. New contributions made to the Sirot Fund will be fully available to continue to support this special scholarship.
The Kay Ross Scholarship
This named scholarship was established in 2011 to honor Kay Ross (1935-2011). The scholarship was created in recognition of Kay Ross’s many years of service and invaluable contributions to YUWO, particularly as the founder of the scholarship program.
Members may make contributions to YUWO’s Scholarship Program In Memory Of individuals or In Honor Of family members and friends on birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. These contributions are acknowledged in the YUWO Newsletter.
A legacy gift can also be used to benefit the YUWO scholarship program. Please consider such a bequest in your estate planning.
