Every twelve years, impassioned devotees pull a 65-feet tall unwieldy chariot on a month long journey through Kathmandu Valley, its rider an enigmatic god. The endeavor calls for extreme cooperation and careful observance of rituals. But the festival is also an arena of gritty reality, where participants compete for everything from a share of ritual meat to status and proximity to God. Every twelve years, it’s the same question: will the journey succeed?
