Professor Smock specializes in the study of family, gender, and social inequality. Of particular interest are gender inequality, changing family patterns, and the implications of each for the other. Her research has focused on the economic consequences of divorce and marriage, nonresident fatherhood, remarriage, single-mother families, child support, and unmarried cohabitation. Currently, she is examining racial, ethnic, and gender variation in the meaning and implications of cohabitation in the United States.
