The first shipment of 500kg of siratany made it safely from Bezà Mahafaly to Oakland, California, by oxen cart, lorry, van, and boat! The rapidly growing spice-export company LAFAZA, based in Toamasina, handled the export and is now looking for US markets for siratany. This initiative builds on the efforts of women salt producers in Bejio village throughout 2014, over which period they organized themselves into an association, developed more sustainable production techniques, and improved quality control. A reforestation project in Bejio village continues to provide sustainable wood for siratany production. It is hoped that, over the long-term, this initiative will provide a better and more stable source of income for women producers.
