Decree gives legal recognition to extension of the Bezà Mahafaly Special Reserve

On April 21st, 2015Map showing Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve and surrounding villages, Decree No. 2015-733 formally recognized the extension of the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve to 4,200 ha from 600ha. The Reserve will be co-managed with the local community as an IUCN Category V Reserve. The new boundaries include an expanded core area of fully protected forest, incorporating the two separate parcels of forest protected when the Reserve was originally established in 1986 (Decree No.86-168). The new boundaries also include zoned areas, where sustainable use of the forest is permitted. Hunting and forest cutting are not permitted anywhere in the Reserve.
